  • Day 1 | 18 May

  • Most organisations have an ambidextrous design. A large part of the organisation deploys techniques to maximise performance in the known market. A much smaller part deploys techniques to discover growth opportunities in the unknown market. For decades, that’s been good enough.

    It isn’t anymore.

Today’s leaders are having to face a difficult reality. The known markets are under attack from digital players. Some are established Big Tech players. Others are obscure start-ups. They are all focused on eating into known markets via digital means. Threats are coming in all shapes and sizes from all directions.

Established organisations have to respond. They need to learn how to re-explore the known. If you’ve run any hackathons or workshops on agile methodology or design thinking, then you’ve already entered the realm of re-exploration.

Sadly, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Welcome to the challenge of tri-dexterity.

    A tri-dextrous organisation needs to:

    - Exploit the known
    - Explore the unknown
    - Re-explore the known

The problem with re-exploring the known is that it feels strange and unnatural. It’s like being asked to repeatedly sign your name with your wrong hand. You can, but it looks ugly and feels weird. It would be so much easier and faster to switch back to your usual hand.

It’s a deep paradox. The best way to survive and thrive is to do things that feel strange and unnatural. Even worse, the effort to resist the desire to switch back, and to continue to learn and practice this strange new way of doing things, is cognitively, physically and emotionally exhausting.

    In this talk, we’ll explore:

    - The neuroscience of tri-dexterity: why the brain resists the novel and unknown, and what to do about it
    - Leadership and tri-dexterity: how to re-imagine leadership as an enabling force in this strange and complex reality
    - Organizational design and tri-dexterity: what types of culture and teamwork practices enable high-performance in a tri-dextrous environment
    Big Idea

  • As we move towards a post-pandemic world, many business leaders are realising that 'getting back to normal' is not really worth pursuing when there was already such a complex set of systemic issues to be resolved in the pre-Covid workplace. One of these enduring complex challenges is the puzzle of workplace productivity. So with that in mind: * What do we mean by reimagining HR in today's workplace? * How do we create valuable time to focus on what is truly productive? * What is the role of technology in all of this? In this keynote, Barry Flack, Workforce Strategist and author of the whitepaper "Boosting HR productivity in 2021" will discuss how HR can shed its unproductive legacy by reimagining its organisation with a culture supported by technology and the rise of smart work tools. He will outline seven productivity tips to help reimagine the HR function - from injecting more science into decision making and cleaning up unproductive habits to changing the HR operating model.

A deep-dive into the themes outlined in The Tri-Dextrous Organisation keynote.

1: Neuroscience - revitalising the right hemisphere of the brain

We once thought that the left hemisphere of the brain was rational, logical and analytical; and the right hemisphere was artistic, creative and musical. We believed one side was dominant, and that the dominant side determined somebody’s personality.

We now know this is wrong. Very wrong. Both sides do both, but in different ways.

The left side deals with the known, analysing, breaking down, and dividing complex wholes into simple to understand and manage parts. It reacts with deep anxiety, fear and rigidity when faced with novelty, uncertainty and the unexpected. The right side deals with the unknown, embraces the novel, unusual and even the downright weird, and is curious to take exploratory steps into strange, new worlds.

For more than a century, we’ve habitually thought of and designed organisations as if they were left-hemisphere-only brains. As a result, they are ill-equipped to deal with novelty, strangeness or paradox. Faced with such conditions, they react with deep anxiety and dysfunctional fear. That’s a potentially fatal response in today’s increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous markets.

The first half of the masterclass explores how to start taking different stances towards novelty, strangeness and paradox in order to enable the right-hemisphere thinking and deliver effective practices of re-exploration. We will look at:

    - Western and Asian philosophies of thought - two different cultural approaches to dealing with ‘reality’ that, when combined, can be extraordinarily powerful
    - The paradoxical power of mental models - the mental models or maps that the left brain creates to describe ‘reality’ can trap us in one-sided perspectives that lead to dysfunctional relationships and the stifling, smothering and strangling of the vital capacity to generate innovative and creative solutions to complex situations

2: Adaptive Emergence - new ways of thinking about leadership, culture and teamwork

Drawing from themes discussed in part one, the second half of the masterclass will take a deep dive into leadership, culture and teamwork, and examine how current “best practices” need to shift for organisations to become future-ready. We will explore:

    - The Paradox of Leadership - how it’s vital to ‘know thyself’ but avoid the kind of ‘heroic’ leadership that can lead to monstrous outcomes
    - The Paradox of Culture - how a powerful culture is essential to enabling sense making, decision making & action taking to become ever more tightly coupled, rapidly and repeatedly iterated, deeply embedded and widely distributed throughout the organisation but avoiding the strong-value monocultures that actively inhibit the very creativity, critical thinking, and cognitive flexibility that’s at the heart of future work
    - The Paradox of Teamwork - how you must cultivate collaborative, socially engaged and actively learning teams as the basic unit of intelligent, purposeful action in the organisation but avoid strong teams degenerating into factional groupthink, anxiety and conformity

The Current Context In the current wave of the pandemic people continue to work under pressure and are expected to perform to high, often elite, standards to meet the needs of organisations and clients. For many, the first wave produced a new and exciting set of challenges. How to work under these new conditions? And many rose admirably to the challenge. Now though, weariness is beginning to set in. The question is not so much how to begin to work in these new contexts but rather how to keep on working – with energy and enthusiasm when so many of the factors that have historically sustained working life have gone. It calls for grit, resilience, and new abilities to connect with others remotely, collaborate and navigate the continually renewing complexity and uncertainty of the current situation. In this 90-minute session Michael will introduce the theory and practice of Mindfulness as it applies in leadership contexts. Michael will discuss research he has conducted into the outcomes of mindfulness training amongst senior business leaders and will teach a number of mindfulness meditation practices. There will be the chance to discuss your experience of these in the group. You will leave the session with a much clearer idea of what mindfulness is, how it applies in leadership contexts, and Michael will provide links to downloadable audio materials to enable you to continue to practice at home

Without proactive feedback and direction, people are ‘blind’ and will work on their own assumptions of how they are performing to meet business needs. But employee feedback is a two-way street and your entire team should not only be willing to accept feedback but actually encourage it and see the opportunity to openly discuss work topics as a critical element of the job. Regardless of whether the feedback being given is positive and complimentary or is being given to help an employee improve in certain areas, this powerful (yet very under-utilized and frequently ill-used) management tool will increase staff engagement and productivity. Feedback in its simplest form is the act of sharing reactions to another party’s actions, opinions and behavior. What’s not so simple however is the timing and (most importantly) the method and manner of how the message is delivered and received. In a workplace environment where openness is valued, proactive employee feedback in a non-threatening manner should be a regular occurrence which will result in staff feeling more motivated, involved and willing to contribute. Feedback is a very powerful method to convey the needs of individuals, team, and the entire organization. When carried out in the correct manner it can give a huge boost to employee engagement and productivity….. but when poorly executed it can lead to conflict and low morale. Join this insightful masterclass to learn about how to give and receive feedback that boosts morale and drives performance

In this highly interactive masterclass, Deborah will run through the four key factors that together make up your organisation’s Change Vitality - its capacity to embrace ongoing, disruptive change:

    1. the quality of your leaders’ inner state
    2. the skill of your leaders’ outer actions
    3. your fateful choice of change approach
    4. how well you pay attention to underlying systemic orders

It’s not surprising that so many change efforts fail, with these four items to continually pay attention to, but when you do invest in Change Vitality skill building my research convincingly shows that you will have greater chance of success.

How can HR both get greater personal skill in these areas, as well as invest in capability building for their organisation at large?

Join this insightful masterclass to learn about eight steps to help organizations discover and embrace an authentic higher purpose—something that will dramatically improve every aspect of any enterprise, including the bottom line. What does a lofty notion like purpose have to do with business basics like the bottom line? Robert E. Quinn says pretty much everything. Leaders and managers are taught that employees are self-interested and work resistant, so they create systems of control to combat these expectations. Workers resent these systems, and performance suffers. To address the performance issues, managers double down on the coercion, creating a vicious cycle and a self-fulfilling prophecy. But there is a better way. Professor Quinn during this masterclass will demonstrate show that when an authentic higher purpose permeates business strategy and decision-making, the cycle is broken. Employers and employees see themselves as working together toward an inspiring goal, not just trying to hit quarterly targets. They fully engage, become proactive contributors, and, ironically, easily exceed those quarterly targets. This Masterclass will help any organization discover its authentic purpose and weave it into the fabric of everything it does, leading to unprecedented levels of personal satisfaction, service and product innovation, and economic growth.

The field of People Analytics is at a crossroads. The number of tools and sophisticated applications keeps increasing, more and more organizations are building dedicated analytics groups, everyone in HR knows the importance of data and analysis when making talent decisions … yet organizations still struggle to put analytics at the center of human capital decision making and organizational change. This should be the dawn of a Golden Age of People Analytics, yet without significant improvement the greater risks are isolation and stagnation. This masterclass provides tools and frameworks to overcome the current challenges facing People Analytics. It is designed for the two critical communities of professionals who have to work together for People Analytics to achieve the new Golden Age: analytics professionals, and organizational development (OD) and HR generalists. Increase the breadth and impact of analytics through the following modules Turn data into C Suite decision making: Analytics efforts too often focus on finding facts to demonstrate “objective” realities in the org system without ensuring they resonate with the right audience. This module shows how to influence and drive the right interpretation of the data from the business leaders’ perspective, not just factual presentations of statistical analyses. Integrate analytics and OD to activate successful org change and transformation: Success change requires the right mix of process, measurement and action. Combine the best data and measurement tools from the analytics world, with the dynamic tools and frameworks used by OD to diagnose, guide and deliver organizational change and transformation programs that work. Conduct org diagnostics using qualitative and quantitative analysis: Classic analytics approaches rely too heavily on analyzing and collecting data from individuals, rather than the teams and org units where the business and strategic outcomes are realized. Comprehensive org diagnostics of the drivers of business performance require a combination of case study and systems analytics. The masterclass will also include a review of cutting edge and advanced analytics techniques to clarify, for both analytics and non-analytics professionals: • What the techniques are good for, and their limitations • How best to apply them on their own, versus in conjunction with other measurement, diagnosis and change approaches Examples of the techniques and issues to be addressed include machine learning, network analysis, advanced survey design and analysis, and identifying economic relevance rather than just statistical significance.

    PERSONAL LEADERSHIP MASTERY

  • The climate emergency, geopolitical changes, Covid-19, all your business drivers are changing. Are you also questioning whether trying harder is enough to deliver the results your business needs? Trying harder is no longer enough, now we need to try different. Fundamentally different.

Work as we knew it will never return.

So the job of HR as we knew it will never return.

The business results your leadership team is accountable for delivering now rest on your ability to develop in yourself, in the leadership team, in fact the whole organisation, the capacity to see what is currently hidden and think what is currently unthinkable.

In this keynote and the masterclass that follows it you will see what you can do to:

    - rebuild what you think;
    - which requires rebuilding how you think;
    - and rebuilding who you believe you are.

Only after these three rebuilds can you and your leadership team see what is hidden, think what is unthinkable, and do what is fundamentally different to deliver the business results now needed.

    Big Idea

  • There is a key BIG assumption held today that organisations are collections of people and that behaviour (and therefore culture) is a result of peoples’ makeup - their values, personalities, styles, motivations. So HR focuses mainly on addressing these people issues. HR practices are steeped in people and organisational solutions based on these psychological and interpersonal principles. Of course this may be somewhat true, necessary and helpful. But what if this were also a blind spot and a constraint? What if we were so focused here that we were missing key data, information and an understanding of behaviour and organisations which is keeping us stuck? Joan argues that we could hold another BIG assumption - that organisations are complex adaptive systems and that behaviour emerges from the interactions between individuals and subsystems and the different roles they play in relation to each other. Seeing these networks of roles, relations and rules of engagement and their patterns of interaction (the organisational system) and working with these instead of (or in addition to) the makeup of the individual parts is now essential. Her thesis is that as complexity increases we need to jump paradigms (or at least include this one). HR practitioners need to become organisational ecologists not just organisational psychologists, people and culture experts. Learning to see, make sense of and intervene in organisations in more systemic and ecological ways is no longer a ‘nice to have’ - in the ever increasing complexity territory it’s imperative and vital for our whole ecology. In her session Joan will share why this is essential now. What we are missing if we don’t integrate this relational lens AND how liberating it can be if we do! If you don’t already see yourself as an organisational ecologist or you don’t think you have fully developed this lens and muscle yet, this session invites you with curiosity to step into this role, try on ‘these glasses’, explore some theory, hear stories of its application and have a play with some practices which draw out its distinctions and make is real.

Is your talent strategy delivering? Are your leaders using the strategy to drive competitive advantage and to minimise risk? If, like most organisations you are stuck in an annual cycle of talent processes that have a little business impact, then now is the time to rethink. Now is the time to focus on how to liberate talent instead of trying to manage it. This session will challenge many of your assumptions about talent and talent management. It will introduce you to new ways to develop a talent strategy that is emergent and responsive, that creates an inclusive and collaborative talent ecosystem, that looks beyond formal process to develop a culture that encourages thriving and learning and that balances the needs of the organisation with those of the individual resulting in high engagement and performance. Did you know that between 30-50% of all leadership transitions fail during the first 18-24 months? Typically, organisations work extremely hard to identify and hire new leadership talent…but then rely on hope when it comes to making their new investment successful. The cost of replacing a senior leader can be anywhere between 2.5 to 10 times their salary. Given the high stakes, it is surprising how little good guidance is available to new leaders on how to transition more effectively and efficiently into a new leadership role. And this is particularly true during a global pandemic! There are many reasons for this shockingly high failure rate. Together we will explore the reasons for failure and learn about what works best in successful leadership transitions. We will also shed light on how to transition more effectively in a virtual setting, e.g. during a global pandemic. So tune in to find out more…

“The Future is not quite what it used to be”. Disruption and change in the world of work were already well underway before the onset of the Covid pandemic. However, we now face a once in a generation opportunity (particularly in HR) to re-set our working models and norms and to accelerate the best of what we want to see a change in the future of work and working life.

Kevin and his team of international partners have been supporting organisations and leaders work through and plan what their “Future of Work” and Hybrid work models will look like in practical reality - and what is needed to prepare their organisations, leaders and employees for the future over the coming months. During the session he will share the lessons learned from this work to date and will provide participants with a four phase framework to scope and plan their work programmes towards building a productive, agile and engaging work model and environment for the future.

Every successful change needs a spark, a reason, and a context that connects emotionally as well as rationally with individuals and leaders. The practical and imminent need that now presents itself to re-set our post-Covid ways of working provides us with that spark to shape our future of work. Individuals and leaders have never been (at the same time) so individually engaged, alert, and invested in shaping what that new world of work will now look like for them and their organizations. In going through the practical task of designing what a new blended model of work and a new definition of the workplace will now look like, we also have the opportunity to create how that new work model and employee experience will be in reality. Self-organisation, distributed and authentic leadership, trust & psychological safety, flexibility in how and where we work, a new employment deal, personal resilience and agility – these are just some of the principles and values that we now have the opportunity to amplify, develop and integrate into the new world of work that we all want to see.

It has never been a better time, never been a more concerning time for employees” (Andrew McAfee). This quote prompts the important question of how do we future-proof our careers and skills for ourselves and for our workforces. With work and working life moving so fast, how can we thrive in a continuously changing future of work rather than just coping with it or getting by. Individuals are also now expected to perform and adapt to increasingly agile ways of working and always-on work environments at an ever-increasing pace - across virtually every sector and industry. Work and working life are changing faster than at any time in our history and this brings both wonderful opportunities but also challenges as well…. So what are the skills that can help us to thrive rather than just cope in agile work environments today and also help us to adapt to the inevitable changes to come in the future of work? This is what personal agility and this masterclass is all about. Specifically, we are going to look at The agility challenge from the individual perspective What an agile mindset is and why is it important - both in the short and longer-term What are the skills of personal agility and how can we develop them We know that you will benefit from taking this time to consider how agile are you today, how this skill set can help you be more adaptive, purposeful, and fulfilled at work today – and also confident and excited about the future of work as it unfolds for you and your workforce.
